I wonder how much cash is required to fund the cost of local radio on DAB? I have a couple of DAB radios but hardly ever listen to them now I've got a Squeezebox with Internet Radio.

It doesn't look like FM radio is going anywhere soon – how many cars have DAB?

Also what happened DAB+ has that died a death?

  1. do you think a portable internet connected box with speakers that just did internet radio would work? personally I like to have my trusty wireless (in the old fashioned sense of the word) but if it could tune into just about anything I think I'd like it even more.

  2. Jim Prince says:

Possibly, portable DAB radios are pretty lousy. I use an FM Radio in the shed :-)

  3. Lee Bowyer says:

what are you thinking for the wireless segment? GSM or Wifi..?

  4. Jim Prince says:

It would need both surely :-)

  5. Lee Bowyer says:

seems like it would be an awfully complex device just to receive audio – especially compared to how basic you can make an FM receiver…

circuit complexity isn't the end of it either – think about the power requirements needed – again compared to an FM receiver which if you just want to listen through headphones can be powered by the radio waves themselves…

still that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a marketable device :)

  6. Lee Bowyer says:

although thinking a bit further on – i guess the deal is that FM is an inefficient use of a finite resource (radio bandwidth) – whereas silicon is cheap and plenty full…

  7. changing the subject slightly, you asked about running a radio station …. have you been following the local TV station opportunity http://goo.gl/zqwqe

  8. Patrick Kirk says:

The car has DAB. Great providing you're not going anywhere !! On the move reception is far from ubiquitous. Even for Radio 2.

  9. Lee Bowyer says:

I didn't know about the local TV stuff – be interesting to see how that develops…

  10. Patrick Kirk says:

Try the Pure vl-61558 – One Flow UK – DAB, FM, WiFi

DAB does not have a future as far as I am concerned. I have tried 3 DAB radios so far , DAB promises a great deal but is unable to supply a practical way of listening to radio programs. Very Poor battery life, Signal drop-outs even in a strong signal area, terrible audio quality (music sations in low bitrate mono for goodness sake ?) More stations but none that I want to listen to that are not already available on medium wave, long Wave and FM. If you want interesting radio from all round the world, try a shortwave radio – a band used since the 1920s which is now being re-vitalised by a new digital system Digital Radio mondial. Of course if you are able to access the internet the choice of radio stations is fantastic. DAB is a joke forced on us by people who will do anything to avoid admitting that they made a big mistake.
