Why books are better than computers

bookI’ve just read an article on CBS News linked from Slashdot. Apparently a University of Texas Library has removed all the books from the undergraduate library and replaced them with among other things

"colorful overstuffed chairs for lounging, barstools for people watching, and booths for group work. In addition to almost 250 desktop computers, there will be 75 laptops available for checkout, wireless Internet access, computer labs, software suites, a multimedia studio, a computer help desk and repair shop, and a cafe."

In light of this alarming turn of events here are 10 reasons why books are better than computers and the internet.

  1. Books don’t need electricity or a network connection
  2. You can read a book in the bath
  3. Books smell better than computers
  4. Books can’t get viruses
  5. Books don’t give me a headache
  6. No one wants to steal your book
  7. Books are cheaper
  8. Books are lighter
  9. Books don’t need to be upgraded
  10. Books don’t burn your legs if you use them when wearing shorts (unlike my laptop)

The most god awful period ever in software development

causticTech has posted another scathing attack on the Software Industry on his blog.

Here’s a brief snippet

“anybody who has used the word folksonomy and still take themselves seriously should be gagged, defecated upon, pistol-whipped and finally shot. you know who you are…”

I wonder if he kisses his mother with that mouth? Having said that it’s an enjoyable rant with some quality swearing. It’s just a shame we have to wait 3 months between posts.
