Mac OS X

Posted on June 26th, 2005 in Technology by Jim Prince

I’ve recently had the chance to play about with Mac OS X on a PowerBook G4 and I’ve got to say I’m really impressed. The things that have impressed me most include;

  1. The hardware – I love the backlit keys, the super sharp screen and the high quality speakers.
  2. The Safari web browser – Fast, slick and no problems rendering sites.
  3. The fact that it connected to my wireless network first time with no problems.
  4. The Interface – Some cracking visual effects and it’s pretty intuitive too.
  5. And finally the fact that underneath it all there’s a UNIX shell.

My only gripe is battery life which seems pretty poor.

I’ve even managed to connect to one of my X86 desktops using VNC. I’m determined to find something that doesn’t work so I’d better try some Microsoft stuff.

I’ll also be upgrading to Tiger at some point over the weekend, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

Apple on Intel

AppleBob Cringely has an interesting take on why Apple have decided to use Intel processors in their computers instead of PowerPC chips.

You can read it here here.

You can read the original Apple press release here.

Steve Jobs is anything but predictable so who knows what he’s planning?

Hornet

Hornet

We found a hornet in my girlfriend’s greenhouse at the weekend. Unfortunately it got trapped in there and died (probably from the heat). They must be pretty rare as this is only the second one I’ve ever seen.

Apparently they are Britain’s largest wasp and are common only in parts of Southern England. They are relatively docile and will rarely sting, but I wasn’t taking any chances.

Another important Longhorn development…yeah right

Microsoft have decided to drop the ‘My’ prefix from ‘My Documents’, ‘My Computer’, ‘My Network Places’ etc.

According to Tech News World

“The "My" prefix was apparently an attempt to create a personal connection between people and their computers at a time when the idea of using a computer might have been forbidding.”

Frankly I don’t care what Windows folders are called provided Microsoft produce an Operating System that is secure, performs well on current hardware and actually works.
