Nokia’s new phone is no iPod killer

Posted on April 30th, 2005 in Technology by Jim Prince

I’ve just been reading on The Register about Nokia’s new range of phones. Ok so in terms of technology a hard disk based mobile phone is pretty cool, but an iPod killer? Who are they trying to kid?

I suppose a battery life of 12.5 hours, as a music player is ok, but remember this is also a mobile phone, a device that you shouldn’t need to re-charge daily.

Did Camera phones kill off digital cameras? No.

Will Music phones kill off MP3 players?

Well what do you think?

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

MacWhilst I’ve not tried the latest version of Mac OS X myself, this has to be one of the most comprehensive reviews of any operating system I’ve ever read (well mostly read).

We’ve just bought a new Powerbook at Talis, I think I’ll need to borrow it for "evaluation purposes".

I still intend to buy a Mac mini at some point this year.

Nazi Headquaters could of been my home town!

Bridgnorth

I’ve read in my local newspaper about newly discovered documents that reveal Hitler’s Headquarters for Nazi Britain could have been based in Bridgnorth.

The story is confirmed on the BBC’s Website.

It’s hard to believe that a town as small and insignificant as Bridgnorth could have featured so prominently in their invasion plans. Apparently the town was a logical choice as it is located in the centre of the country and would have been sparsely defended.

The documents were sold at auction on Wednesday.

On-One is the one!

inbredBack on the theme of Cycling and British Cycling manufacturers, I’ve recently come across a company called On-One.

They manufacture a number of different bikes and bike components and seem to have got very positive reviews in the cycling press. The prices seem good as well.

I like the simplicity of the single speed bikes but I don’t think I have the fitness to own one. The geared version (pictured above) looks pretty cool though. I could well end up owning one of these, I’ve always preferred steal frames over aluminium or more exotic materials such as carbon fibre or titanium (with the exception of the Pace stuff I’ve discussed before).

ANTs Not Television

AntI read about this software on Scoble’s Weblog.

It does look really cool, and it’s interesting that it started life on the Mac.

I’m about to dip a tentative toe into the world of Podcasting, so it’s nice to know I’m already behind the times.

Dell Axim

Dell AximI’ve recently got my grubby mitts on a Dell Axim X50v PDA.

By far the best feature is the 3.7" TFT display with a superb 640×480 resolution. It’s a fairly powerful piece of kit with a 624Mhz Intel CPU and 64mb of ram.

The only disappointment so far is the 802.11b wireless. Surely they could have used 802.11g.

Still beggars can’t be choosers.

Cycling and Pace Cycles

Posted on April 14th, 2005 in Personal, Sport & Recreation by Jim Prince

PaceNow the weather has picked up I’ve decided to get back into cycling. My current bike is looking a bit tired so I’ve decided to upgrade some of the parts.

First to go will be the forks, I’ve never been happy with the cheap Rock Shox that came with the bike so they’ll be replaced with some rigid RC31 forks from Pace Cycles, along with a new headset.

Next I’ll get some new tires and possibly a pair of wheels. If I have any cash left I’ll look at replacing the drivetrain.

Its a shame I can’t afford to replace the whole bike. I’d love a bike built around a Pace RC300 frame but at £950 for the frame alone I just can’t justify the outlay.

If you’re wondering what you get for your money, each frame is hand built from 7000 series Aluminium and Carbon Fibre. The frames are finished to a very high quality and each weighs less that 1500g.

Pace is a British company which is a bonus.

Other British manufacturers I rate highly are Orange and Chas Roberts.

causticTech does it again

This guy has to be one of my favourite bloggers. His latest posting on the current state of Software Development is pure class.

The books he refers to definitely have a lot to answer for.

You can read it here.
