Ink cartridge rip off

Posted on February 22nd, 2005 in Technology by Jim Prince

Why oh why are these bloody things so expensive!?

I must have spent a small fortune on Ink Cartridges over the years and it’s not like I print vast manuscripts everyday.

I have two printers a cheap Dell A920 which I got for next to nothing and an old but good quality Epson Photo 750.

Carts for both cost more than £20 each, the Dell probably isn’t even worth £20!

I remember reading somewhere that Inkjet Ink is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. I know manufactures have to recoup R&D costs but I still think we’re being ripped off.

RHEL 4.0 = RHEL 3.1

Red Hat
So Red Hat have released version 4.0 of its Enterprise Linux software?

From what I’ve read it appears to be no more then an update to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0.

The highlights are as follows;

  • The 2.6 Linux kernel has replaced the heavily patched and modified Red Hat 2.4 kernel
  • SELinux security enhancements
  • Desktop software upgrades and additions including GNOME 2.8, OpenOffice.org, Novell Evolution, RealPlayer, Acrobat Reader
  • Integration with Active Directory authentication
  • A Microsoft Exchange connector
  • EAL4+ certification pending

Hardly ground breaking. Maybe I’m being unfair but I would have expected much more for a product branded as "the defining milestone in its evolution".

I’m also not sure what the tagline "just another day at Red Hat" is supposed to convey.

Having said that they have a great product and in my opinion RHEL is the best choice of Enterprise Linux platform.

New Golf GTi

I’ve just been reading in Whatcar? magazine about the new Golf GTi. I’m a big fan of the original 76 GTi and I was pleased to read that the new model recaptures the spirit of the original.

I love the new look, and the performance and handling are said to be spot on. The new Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) also sounds interesting. Basically the transmission uses dual clutches, one for the gear you’re in, and one to pre-select the next gear up. Apparently this results in smoother, faster gear changes, with no loss in power.

I’ve already owned a MKII Golf Driver, and a MK III GTi. My current car is also a Golf, a MK IV 1.8 GTi Turbo. Will I get the new MK V? It’ll definitely be on the shortlist!

Family Tree

Family TreeI’ve always been interested in Genealogy and over the last week or so I’ve started to trace my family tree.

I’ve tried several different software packages to build my tree and so far the two that I’ve been most impressed with are Genbox Family History and phpGedView. The latter is a software package available from SourceForge that enables you to view and edit your Genealogy online.

So far I have added 121 people and 37 Families and have gone back as far as 1852.

Outlook Rules (or not as the case may be)

Posted on February 8th, 2005 in Technology by Jim Prince

There have been two instances lately where MS Outlook 2003 has caused me grief.

1) Logged into my e-mail to receive the following error message;

"Can’t move the items. The file <path>\<filename>.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, and then permanently delete them."

Very helpful, what if there isn’t anything I want to delete? Why doesn’t it prompt me to archive them to another folder?

2) Added a new e-mail rule and was rewarded by the following message;

"One or more rules could not be uploaded to Exchange server and have been deactivated. This could be because some of the parameters are not supported or there is insufficient space to store all your rules."

The reason according to this Knowledge Base article;

"This behaviour occurs if the rules that are in your mailbox exceed a size of 32 kilobytes (KB)."

THIRTY-TWO KILOBYTES! What can you do with 32kb?

Bill Gates once said 640K ought to be enough for anybody. If you’re configuring Rules & Alerts you don’t even get that!

The Value of Vinyl

Posted on February 2nd, 2005 in Music by Jim Prince

RecordsThis week I dug out some of my old Vinyl LPs.

I believe this format still has plenty of life left and there are a couple of reasons why I consider vinyl to be better then mp3.

  • If you play them on a decent record deck the sound quality is better.
  • MP3s don’t come with sleeve notes or decent artwork.
  • My LP Collection is better then my MP3 collection.

Surely all this MP3 crap will never catch on?
